PENANG FIELDTRIP
THE TRIP TO PENANG HAS BEEN VERY INSIGHTFUL, I GOT TO EXPERIENCE A WHOLE DIFFERENT SIDE OF MALAYSIA. FOOD WAS DELICIOUS AND CHEAP, EVERYWHERE I WENT TO HAD SMALL POTS OF FLOWERS; UNORGANISED BUT VERY PRETTY. PENANG TO ME IS A PLACE WHERE LOCALS ARE GROUNDED TO NATURE WHEREBY THEY MAKE EFFORTS TO INCORPORATE PLANTS IN THEIR SURROUNDINGS. DIFFERENT CULTURES IN PENANG CAN BE CLEARLY SEEN, AND THEY ALL LIVE PEACEFULLY ALONGSIDE. I APPRECIATED HOW BEAUTIFULLY PENANG HABITANTS PRESERVED THEIR HISTORY, PRESERVED THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WINDOWS, REPRESENTING ITS HISTORY. THIS TRIP WAS AMAZING, GETTING TO KNOW NEW PEOPLE AND THEIR PERSONALLY OPINION AND EXPERIENCE IN PENANG.
I WAS ABLE TO IDENTIFY TWO MAJOR INSPIRATIONS FOR MY PROJECT WHEN VISITING PENANG:
1) FISH CAGES/NETS
2) TRADITIONAL SEWING MACHINE.
FISH CAGES IN PENANG
PROJECT 2
THE OBJECT CHOSEN IS FISH TRAP, LOCALLY KNOWN AS BUBU, THE ANCIENT FISH TRAPS.
SHOWN ABOVE.
WORK FOR FIRST CRIT
PREVIOUSLY THE CHOSEN KEYWORDS WERE:
1) BENDING
2)OVERLAPPING
3)CONFUSING.
HOWEVER "CONFUSING" WAS DISAPPROVED AND LATER REPLACED BY LAYERING.
THE MOCK UP MODEL ABOVE WAS TO REPRESENT EVERY KEYWORD.
FINAL BOARD AND MODEL
SOME MODIFICATIONS WERE MADE, SUCH AS THE TRANSLUCENT PATH BLOCKAGE HAS BEEN ELIMINATED, AND SMALLER METAL LAYERING HAS BEEN ADDED TO REPRESENT THE SMALLER PATH IN THE BUBU LEADING TO THE ACTUAL TRAP.
WOODEN ASPECTS OF THE CONCEPTUAL ART REPRESENT THE ORIGINAL BUBU AS BAMBOO AND WOOD WERE USED TO BUILD IT WHILST METAL REPRESENTS THE MODERN/INDUSTRIAL FISH TRAPS.
PROJECT 3
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
INSPIRATION: BUBU- TRADITIONAL FISH TRAP
LOCATION: JAO TIM, KL
THE WHOLE SPATIAL DESIGN IS BASED AND INSPIRED BY THE SHAPE/OUTLINE OF THE BUBU. THE AIM WAS TO MAKE THE USERS, AND PARTICIPANTS EXPERIENCE THE FEELINGS OF THE BUBU- ITS ENTRANCE, ITS PATH, ITS TRAPPING ELEMENT.
JAO TIM IS TO BE FLIPPED INTO A WORKSHOP CONDUCTED BY A FREELANCE ARTIST ASSIGNED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES TO PREVENT THE FADING CULTURE OF BUBU, THE LATTER WILL BRIEF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ABOUT BUBU MAKING. THE WHOLE THEME AND FLOW OF THE WORKSHOP IS BASED ON NATURAL MATERIALS MAINLY- BRICKS, TIMBER, BAMBOO, CONTRASTED BY MODERN, MANMADE MATERIALS- TEMPERED GLASS, METAL, CONCRETE.
